Mount Pleasant Food Justice Project

Introducing the Mount Pleasant Food Justice Project

For most families, when money is tight the food budget is squeezed. We buy cheaper, less nutritious food and rely on what we can get from charities which often does not meet our nutritional, social or cultural needs.

At the Food Action Collective we think that making sure that everyone can get enough fresh, healthy food should be a top priority of our society.  Does it make sense to you that banks and corporations  post billion dollar profits while some people can’t even get enough to eat? It doesn’t to us.  That’s why we are starting the Mount Pleasant Food Justice Campaign. If you live or work in Mount Pleasant, or use a service in this area, and you care about food justice, get involved in the campaign.

The Mount Pleasant Food Justice Project has three Objectives:
1.  To raise awareness about how food insecurity hurts our physica and mental health and to fight for social change so that everyone has access to fresh, healthful food.
2.  To make the places in our community that control our access to food – welfare offices, food banks and other charities, grocery stores, landlords, and minimum wage employers – accountable for their actions, and to advocate for changes that increase food security.
3. To find ways of meeting our own needs such as community kitchens, bulk buying, food preservation workshops, clothing exchanges, and community gardening.

Everyone should have access to healthy food. But with starvation level welfare rates and an eight dollar minimum wage, lots of people can’t afford healthy food. That’s an attack on our rights.

The Mount Pleasant Food Justice Project is fighting back. Find out how to get involved at organizingcentre.wordpress.com or call 604-215-2775
