The Language for Liberation Project is English classes run by and for the community. Participants shape the topics of the class, with a focus on the English needed to defend our rights and participate more fully in the social, political and economic life of the city.
The need for the Language for Liberation Project stems from the reality that most immigrant and migrant people need English to assert our rights with employers, welfare workers, landlords, and government officials; yet many of us cannot access English classes due to immigration status, no money to pay for classes, lack of childcare, and other barriers.
We want Language for Liberation because we want to develop the liberatory ideas in our communities and expand our capacity to defend our rights. At the same time, we want to create a culture of multi-lingualism that asserts people’s right to speak, teach and learn their maternal languages. English classes are a venue for sharing values, ideas, and information. These can reinforce the racist, sexist, class oppressive ideas of the majority, or can be an opportunity to express and develop our anti-racist, anti-sexist class consciousness.
The classes are run by the Language for Liberation Project Committee, which is made up of a teacher, learners and volunteers. The Committee puts the power in the learners’ hands and recognizes that teachers and volunteers are learning just as much as the “language learners”.
If you are interested in participating in the Language for Liberation Project as a language learner, volunteer, or the Project Committee, please contact Beth at 604-215-2775 or beth.grayer@gmail.com.
